History

In 1857 the Waverly Town Company of Plattsmouth built the first house in Butler County on Skull Creek, about half a mile from today’s village, but broke up in the Pike’s Peak rush. Settlers came back in 1862, a school opened in 1865, and the post office opened in 1868 as Skull Creek; the town was laid out in 1870–71 and renamed Linwood for the linden, or basswood, trees along the creek. The creek was named for skulls found nearby, and a Pawnee village site near Linwood is on the National Register. Linwood incorporated in 1888, about when the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad came through, and became the junction of its lines to Hastings and Superior, with a roundhouse; the branches were abandoned by the early 1960s. The village peaked at 329 people in 1910, and a flood in 1963 devastated it.
