About Abie
Abie is a village of 65 people (2020) in northeastern Butler County, at 1,450 feet about 11 miles east-northeast of David City and 4 miles north of Bruno. Its early 1900s buildings still stand: the 1904 bank, the 1905 school that now houses Abie’s Place, the 1912 village hall and the 1923 Sokol Auditorium. Abie is on Central Time.
History
Yankee, then German, then Czech settlers came to the area; a wagon train of 13 Czech families from Spillville, Iowa, arrived in July 1869. The settlement was platted in 1877, and Charles Stevens, postmaster from 1878 to 1888, named the post office for his wife, Abigail. When the Chicago & North Western built through in 1887, the town moved about three-quarters of a mile south to the tracks, leaving the Catholic cemetery on the original site. Abie peaked at 210 people in 1910. Its Sokol, organized about 1921 for gymnastics and Czech dances, dedicated its auditorium in June 1923; the hall closed in 2017. Rail service ended in 1962.
